Volunteer Time!

The “C” in CSA stands for “Community, and there’s no better way to build it than to work together.

Each season there are plenty opportunities to get involved, whether it is unloading the truck, signing up for a shift at the CSA site, or working at the annual October Harvest Festival.  Of course, you can always help out by sending recipes in for the newsletter!

For more ways to pitch in, contact your local site manager or call Rachel at 518-672-4465 x 105.

Dear CSA Members:

Here on the farm, the season is subtly changing. It is no longer fully light when we start harvesting at 5 am on Wednesday and the sun is setting earlier at the other end of the day as well. The greenhouse is now mostly empty and the bulk of our time is devoted to harvesting with less and less transplanting, weeding, and seeding. Along with these changes in the work of the garden, my own personal work has changed as well. Two weeks ago I delivered the CSA vegetables to Spring Valley, Garden City, Riverdale, and Consumers Union for the last time.

I will certainly miss the people and the ritual of the CSA delivery. I’ve met many of you as you met the truck and helped me unload. One of the real pleasures of the job was developing some personal relationship with the people that enjoy the fruits of our hard labor. From seeing Jenna in Spring Valley fully pregnant last fall and then with twins at the first pick up this spring to Eva and William at Garden City always ready to help and with occasional treats for Flash. From the boy at Riverdale who once spent a full half an hour singing to Flash in the truck to the friendly gate keeper at Consumers Union who at first couldn’t believe I was dropping off vegetables but then had a big smile and a wave every week.

For me, seeing a friendly face was only a part of the relationship, though. I realized early on that a lot of people really cared about the farm and wanted to know what was going on. The interest that people showed deepened my own commitment to the CSA and made an otherwise long day driving through traffic fun and something I looked forward to.

Now I am moving on to begin training for becoming the next herdsman of the dairy cows at Hawthorne Valley Farm. This job will involve the milking and care of our 60 dairy cows and many more young stock and beef animals. I am looking forward to my new job but I will certainly miss being an intimate part of the CSA. Dante Hesse will take over from me and I’m sure he will do fine. Dante comes to us by way of Spring Valley although he also grew up in part here in Harlemville so he already has a connection to two of the sites. And maybe, if he lets me, I’ll get to do the odd delivery now and then.

Thank you all for a great year and a half and see you at the farm! Dan
