No. 22 November 4, 2004
Dear CSA members,
This is, sadly for us, the last CSA week of this season. All the leaves on the trees around the farm have fallen to the ground, leaving the bare branches to silhouette against the grey winter sky.
In this transition time from full out growing season to frosts already here and the snow coming still, we can tangibly feel the pairing of the seasons here in the Northeast. The coming winter is paired with the coming summer; we couldn’t have one without the other. The falling of the leaves is paired with the coming spring and the new leaf buds.
Our CSA is also a pairing, a pairing of CSA members and farmers, urban communities and rural communities, all of us givers and receivers in a team effort to create a strong network and a healthy Community Supported Agriculture.
All of us on the farm team extend a hearty “Thank You” to all of our CSA members. We are helping each other to provide fresh (yummy!), local, biodynamic food to our communities. Thank You, CSA members! We are looking forward to next spring already. Please let us know if you would like to reserve your spot as a current CSA member.
Another Thank You goes to an exciting part of our farm team each year, our farm apprentices. These are usually young people generally just out of college, interested in the revitalizing of our industrial culture’s food systems by learning and working on a real, biodynamic farm. Our four apprentices have experienced a full and rewarding growing season here, working hard and well, learning biodynamic farming practices and experiencing farm life in the midst of daily chores and a busy world. Will, our apprentice from Western Pennsylvania, said yesterday that "helping people is better than money in the bank." This sentiment was said in reference to Will’s penchant for going and helping other local farmers in the neighborhood here and learning-by-doing what is special about each farm. It is a reflection of Will’s generosity and, in a wider picture, all of our willingness to work together for the good of the whole. The rhythms of the seasons work together to make a whole cycle, and we can only try to learn the wisdom of the seasons.
