We,
along with some of our co-workers at Hawthorne Valley, are working to
develop a plan for water in the Valley. Our goal is to ensure that we
have adequate quantity and quality of water for our own use and that
the water we return to the Valley is as unalterred as possible.
"Adequate quanitity" not only refers to supply, but also to demand -
what conservation measures can we initiate so that "adequate" means as
little as possible? (A consideration that seems strangely lacking from
current political discussions.)
It is
unrealistic to assume that our use of the water will have no effect on
it. However, through good animal and waste water management, we should
be able to minimize our ecological impacts. Finally, water
itself is a tool for education and for art. How can we incorporate
students from Hawthorne Valley School into our process? How can we take
advantage of the appeal of water to make some of our water works not
only functional but beautiful?
This
process is still young. As we develop ideas and sketch out plans, we
will use this site as a forum for sharing them.
