Farm Staff
Steffen Schneider
general farm manager
Steffen began apprenticing in 1982, after finishing his agricultural university studies in Germany. He has been a herdsman for many years and knows our cows, our pastures and our hayfields well. Actually, Steffen knows the whole farm very well and is an excellent teacher. He has given workshops at numerous conferences (NOFA conferences and Biodynamic Association conferences), and he helps to teach the Biodynamic Preparation block at the Pfeiffer Center in Spring Valley, NY.
Katy Lince Katy began apprenticing on farms in 1996 and has been at Hawthorne Valley since 1997. She has been one of the main field vegetable farmers here since 2002. She enjoys working with both animals and vegetables and noticing the interrelated rhythms of the two.
Brian Coen Brian began apprenticing on farms in Hawaii, after working with the Parks Department and with nurseries and orchards. Brian's grandfather was a farmer, but it took many years for Brian to return to his love of those childhood memories and return to the work of farming. He is now our herdsman at Hawthorne Valley.
Mike Kowalski Mike and his family joined the farm in January of 2008. He chose farming as a third career, after being a carpenter and software designer. He discovered a deep interest in and love for Biodynamics when he participated in the year-long course on Biodynamics at the Pfeiffer Center. Michael is in charge of non-lactating livestock and assists with forage harvest and fertility management.
Andrea Williams Andrea and her husband, Nathaniel, came onboard the farm in the spring of 2009. Andrea is one of the main vegetable farmers, in charge of greenhouse management and harvest coordination. She grew up in Switzerland, where she graduated from a three-year training in Biodynamic vegetable cultivation. Prior to joining us, she worked as a landscaper and with Turtle Tree Seed Company.
